Drinking fruit juice dramatically reduces the effectiveness of drugs used to treat cancer, heart conditions and high blood pressure, scientists say.
Research has shown that orange, apple and grapefruit juice can also wipe out the benefits of some antibiotics and hay-fever pills.
It is thought the drinks stop drugs from entering the bloodstream and getting to work in the body - possibly rendering them useless.
The potential effects are so serious, researchers warned, that if in doubt, patients should swap fruit juices for water when on medication.
Researcher David Bailey said: 'This is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure we'll find more and more drugs that are affected this way.'
Twenty years ago, Professor Bailey showed that grapefruit juice dangerously magnifies the effect of the blood pressure drug felodipine.
His findings led to warnings that the drink should be avoided by those on some medicines.
The latest study shows that fruit juices can also reduce the power of medicines - potentially stopping them from doing any good.

Man arrested and locked up for five hours after taking photo of police van ignoring 'no entry' sign

When Andrew Carter saw a police van ignore no-entry signs to reverse up a one-way street to reach a chip shop, he was understandably moved to protest to the driver.
Particularly as he lives on the road and always goes out of his way to obey the signs.
But his complaint brought a volley of abuse from PC Aqil Farooq.
And when Mr Carter took a picture of the van then tried to photograph the officer, PC Farooq rushed out of the shop and knocked his camera to the ground.
Mr Carter was then arrested and bundled into the van over claims he had 'assaulted' an officer with his camera, resisted arrest and was drunk and disorderly.
He was held in a police cell for five hours before being released on bail at midnight.
Mr Carter, 44, lodged a complaint and has since received a personal apology from PC Farooq and Rob Beckley, deputy chief constable of Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
The force yesterday refused to comment on the case, except to say that the disciplinary process was resolved to Mr Carter's 'satisfaction'.
It is understood no further action was taken against PC Farooq, who is a member of the Black Police Association's Avon and Somerset branch.
According to a report from the Bristol Equalities Network published two years ago, PC Farooq's duties within the BPA included work with the wider community on 'good relations with the police'. At the time he was the branch's general secretary.
Yesterday, Mr Carter from Bedminster, Bristol, described his ordeal as a 'very frightening experience'.

A three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals voted 2-1 to reinstate a suit by Rahinah Ibrahim, an architecture student in Stanford’s graduate school who was detained and handcuffed in 2005 as she was about to board a plane to her native Malaysia.
A federal judge in San Francisco had dismissed the suit, citing a law that requires all challenges to Transportation Security Administration orders to be filed directly in an appeals court, with no right to present evidence or convene a jury. But Alex Kozinski, writing for a Ninth Circuit majority, said the no-fly list, though maintained by the TSA, is actually compiled by a branch of the FBI, which can be sued in a trial court like most other federal agencies.

On Tuesday evening, President Sally Mason released a copy of the letter she sent to the head of the Amethyst Initiative (Read letter.) In it she says does not believe lowering the legal drinking age to 18 would be effective at this time. She also claims that there are already too many underage college students who are drinking illegally, and that drunk students have been involved with assaults or unwanted sexual advances with their peers.

Many University of Iowa students like to drink. In fact, the school recently took 12th place on the Princeton Review for the top party schools. Since 1984, the legal age to buy and drink alcohol has been 21. But what if the age limit were lowered to 18? "I kind of feel like it's like that already. People are underage drinking all the time. The Natural Resources Defense Council filed a lawsuit today to uncover critical information that the US government is withholding about the risks posed by pesticides to honey bees.

NRDC legal experts and a leading bee researcher are convinced that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has evidence of connections between pesticides and the mysterious honey bee die-offs reported across the country. The phenomenon has come to be called colony collapse disorder, or CCD, and it is already proving to have disastrous consequences for American agriculture and the $15 billion worth of crops pollinated by bees every year.

EPA has failed to respond to NRDC Freedom of Information Act request for agency records concerning the toxicity of pesticides to bees, forcing the legal action. Recently approved pesticides have been implicated in massive bee die-offs and are the focus of increasing scientific scrutiny, said NRDC Senior Attorney Aaron Colangelo. EPA should be evaluating the risks to bees before approving new pesticides, but now refuses to tell the public what it knows. Pesticide restrictions might be at the heart of the solution to this growing crisis, so why hide the information they should be using to make those decisions?

Although Japan boasts some of the most sophisticated cell phones in the world, delivering high-speed Internet connections, digital TV broadcasts and video downloads, the nation has failed to make its handsets, wireless technology and mobile services hits outside of Japan. he latest initiative spearheaded by the government with an industry group of Japanese carriers and manufacturers is an effort to help Japan catch up in wooing global users, said Masayuki Ito, official at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

Among the wireless innovations Japan hopes to peddle is the wallet phone. The technology relies on a tiny computer chip called FeliCa, embedded in each cell phone, which communicates with a reader-device at stores, train stations and vending machines for cashless payments. FeliCa was developed by Japanese electronics and entertainment company Sony Corp. Such technology is more common in smart cards, popular in Singapore and parts of Europe. But Japan hopes to market the technology abroad for cell phones.

College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age."This is a law that is routinely evaded," said John McCardell, ex-president of Middlebury College in Vermont, who started the organization. I think this research is very much relevant to our generation. Games companies are always blamed for bad events - if there is a school shooting for example - this will be somehow linked back to the fact that the disgruntled student was a gamer.
I think those reports are always unfair and the games industry is used as a scape goat. This article finally sheds some much needed good light on what games can do and the benefits. I don't believe that all gaming and games are good for youth - but I do believe that there are good sides to the industry. If ratings and parental control is used properly the Games Industry is one for everyone to be involved with.

"According to a new study released by researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey, a firm link has been found between very common moisturizers, and the development of skin cancer. Researchers were led by Dr. Allan Conney from Rutgers University, as they ran a test on mice to see what type of effect these moisturizers had on their bodies. They tested four common types, Dermavan, Eucerin, Vanicream, and Dermabase.
What they found was that all four were linked to the development of skin cancer tumors on the mice tested in the study.
They were not looking directly to see if moisturizers caused skin cancer, but instead sort of stumbled into the discovery.
What they did was to expose hairless mice to UV rays, similar to what they would get from sun exposure. They then applied the moisturizers to the mice.
They found that the moisturizers caused non-melanoma skin cancer.
This will likely lead to further research. The study has been published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology."

Although Russia gave the rover thing a blast back in 1971, the roads have been clear for the 1998 Mars Pathfinder Sojourner rover and the current NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers. Spirit and Opportunity are still exploring the planet (regardless of the limping and stiff robotic arms), several years after their warranty expired. But the Exploration Rovers won’t be the most hi-tech robotic buggies to rove the Martian regolith for much longer.

The Obama campaign said it had $65.8 million on hand, compared with Mr. McCain’s $21.4 million at the end of July.
Although neither his bank balance nor his July donations were as robust as Mr. Obama’s, Mr. McCain can count on an infusion of $84 million in public money after the Republican National Convention in early September. BEIJING — After the Chinese women’s gymnastics team won its first-ever Olympic gold medal on Wednesday, its diminutive gymnasts celebrated on the arena floor, hopping and hugging and mugging for the cameras.
The team final had come down to the United States and China and was close until the final rotation, when the Chinese team pulled away. The Americans made several notable and atypical mistakes, including two falls by the team leader Alicia Sacramone that paved the way for China’s win.
One day after its men’s team won gold, China’s women matched the feat. While they celebrated, Martha Karolyi, the United States national team coordinator, continued to question the ages of some of China’s gymnasts. Concerns over eligibility on the six-member team surfaced before the Olympics and have continued all week.
“One of the girls has a missing tooth,” Karolyi said, suggesting that the gymnast was so young that she lost a baby tooth and had yet to have a permanent one emerge.
The grin of Deng Linlin, a Chinese gymnast who is listed as 16, indeed revealed a wide gap. To be eligible for the Olympics, gymnasts must turn 16 this year.

01.55am: Well here we are. We've cooed at the 35,000 fireworks. We've watched Li Ning run along a computer-generated unfolding scroll thing. We've admired the Bird's Nest stadium, kind of absorbed the fact that the No8 is lucky in the Chinese calendar and coughed at the pictures of the smog. And now the Zhang Yimou-directed opening ceremony is over, let the Games begin.

02.15am: This is the place to come for all the live coverage, blogs, comment and instant response to breaking news. You can also find a handy schedule of today's events (in Chinese time) here. No wonder Barney Ronay is welling up already.

02.35 am. The eventing dressage is already under way and Daisy Dick, she drafted in because of injuries to Zara Phillips and Lucy Wiegersma's horses, has already trotted her way to a highly respectable 51.70. (For the equestrian relatively ignorant, the lower the score the better.) FACT: Daisy Dick went to school with our very own Marina Hyde.

Later Britain's dressage star in the eventing team, and an individual medal hopeful in his own right, 39 year-old William Fox-Pitt, who sounds like a character from Harry Enfield, but won silver in Athens, has a chance to go one better.

At the Beijing Olympics, even the dressage is political. Security officers in Hong Kong removed a university student, Christina Chan, who tried to display the Tibetan flag.

02:45am: Equestrian dressage, women's shooting, women's volleyball, basketball and handball are already under way. Indeed, Australia lead Belarus 19-12 at the end of the first quarter in the opening women's basketball pool game. Coming up, we've got bouts of boxing that'll make the fighting in opening ceremony director Yimou's Hero look as menacing as Jimmy Carr. And we've balletically brilliant basketball, swimming, volleyball, fencing, beach volleyball, handball and football, that'll make House of Flying Daggers look like the Friday night lovelies falling out on to the Farringdon Road.

02:58am: You do worry that all this week's political breast-beating about how Britain was due a massive medal haul will come back to bite us. It certainly left a bad taste, as David Mitchell so astutely pointed out, in the mouth. William Fox-Pitt scored 50.20 which puts him in at the medal unhopeful position, at this early stage, of 11th.

03:05am: Seven golds are on offer today, indeed, we're not so far away from the first gold medal – the women's 10 meter air rifle. China's Du Li is reigning Olympic champion and the overwhelming favourite – it would mean so much to the Chinese for her to retain her title. IOC President Jacques Rogge is even due at the shooting range hall to present the medals. The whole nation is wanting and willing it... but at the moment she's running fourth but it's too close to call.
Ironically, in Athens, the German favourite, Heiner Gabelmann, buckled under the strain of expectation. will the same happen to Du Li? You simply can't imagine the pressure.

03:10am: Back to the women's basketball. Australia are beating Belarus 44-28 at half-time. The Athens silver medalists are on course for an easy victory. Next up in Group A will be Mali against New Zealand, you'd expect New Zealand to win that equally comfortably.

03:18am: We don't have a medal yet, but we do have the first athlete to be sent home for failing a drugs test, Greek sprinter Anastasios Gousis, a 200m semi-finalist in Athens four years ago. The Greek Olympic team has already lost 13 members, with 11 weightlifters, a boxer and swimmer Yiannis Drymonakos withdrawn after positive tests in the past three months.

03:34am: After the shooting, the second medal up for grabs is in the Women's 48kg weightlifting final - it's a mixture of snatch and clean & jerk lifting methods, with the best total used to determine the final rankings and medal winners. The Turkish phenomenon that is Nurcan Taylan has just entered the competition, failing at 84KG. Astonishing considering that in Athens she set a then world record of 97.5KG. Next we have a strong Thai contingent, with the home favourite, Chen Xiexia, still to come.

03:40am: There's a result in the women's beach volleyball. Norway have beaten Belgium 2-0. I'm struggling to picture beach volleyball in Norway, and in truth both nations count as minnows next to the likes of Cuba, Brazil and the United States. Though, of course, as ever in Beijing you can't discount the Chinese.

03:54am: Before the shooting final really warms up, let's have a bit of a results and comment round up. In the women's basketball Australia beat Belarus 83-64. Irish fencer Siobhan Claire Byrne lost to Irena Wieckowska in the first round of the Women's Individual Sabre. Lastly, William Fox-Pitt has blamed his horses nerves, after a last minute judge's inspection on his stomach, for his underwhelming performance. "I'm disappointed," said Fox-Pitt. "He (Parkmore Ed) is capable of a lot better. He seemed very aware of where the exit was and it was hard to keep him concentrated."

04:01am: Gold medal - women's 10m air rifle: Katerina Emmons (CZE)
There is disappointment for China in the shooting as Du Li has failed in her attempt to retain the women's 10m air rifle title, instead the competition was dominated by Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic who equalled a world record score of 400 in the qualification round. Lioubov Galkina of Russia took Silver and Snjezana Pejcic of Croatia took Bronze. Du Li had to settle for fifth. Better news for China in the weightlifting though, as Chen Xiexia, is taking the opposition to the cleaners.

04:12am: More Beijing beginnings, the men's cycling, featuring Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre of Spain, and runner-up Cadel Evans of Australia, are on their 148.5 mile way. In fact, the whole thing is something of a Tour de China, taking in some of the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.

04:21am: Women's handball news. France survived a scare to beat Angola 32-31. I mention this partly because Britain is trying to kick start interest in the sport ahead of the 2012 London Olympics. You can find out more here, just be aware that they want women 5ft 11in or taller and men 6ft 3in or taller. And when I say kick start interest (or whatever the handball equivalent is) I mean they want us to start winning, we're not at the Beijing Games.

04:30am: The Olympics is unarguably the biggest sporting spectacle on the planet. For various technological, demographic and political reasons, The Beijing Olympics will probably be the biggest Games ever. Unless you're Sky Sports news, that is. They're focusing on cricket at the Oval (but it's hardly Vic Marks), Arsenal's pre-season victory over Ajax and… Nottingham Forest V Reading. Presumably, because they don't have the rights, The Beijing Olympics have been erased as completely as Trotsky's name in later editions of John Reed's Ten Days that Shook the World. Strewth.

04:35am: Later in the morning, we'll get our first glimpse of several more Brit hopefuls. Rightly-acclaimed poster boy, Ben Ainslie, goes for his third consecutive gold medal in the Heavy Weight Dinghy competition. Also worth following will be Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson, who are the criminally unheralded favourites in the Keelboat (Yngling) class.

04:55am: Back to the weightlifting, where we're at the clean & jerk stage. The weights have been disappointing so far - the event kicked off atypically early, around 10.30am Chinese time, and to be blunt you can't just role out of bed and lift one hundred and ten kilos. In the absence of the elephantine weights I was expecting, I've allowed myself to be distracted by the unexpected weightlifting beauty of Melanie Noel. However, now Madamoiselle Noel is out, then the quality of competition is more than making up for the lack of World Record breaking activity. Chinese star Chen Xiexia looks in control but the other medal placings are between Korean Im Jyoung-Hwa, the impressive Taiwanese lifter Chen Wei Ling, the Thai Pensiri Laosirikul and rising Turkish talent Sibel Özkan.

04:59am: More from the beach volleyball. Bad news for Swiss fans, the women's team lost 0-2 to China, while the men's team were beaten by the same score by the Netherlands. Hey, maybe Roger Federer will make it all right by routing Russia's Dmitry Tursunov later in the tennis.
05:09am: Gold medal - women's 48 kg weightlifting: Chen Xiexia (CHN)
Chen Xiexia has taken the first Chinese gold of the Games, she made it look easy, and was a country mile ahead of the rest of the field. Second was Sibel Özkan from Turkey and third was Chen Wei Ling from Taiwan. Next China will get to add to what is certain to be a Midas-ly monstrous haul of golds in the Men's 10m air pistol final.
05:30am: We've a grappling chance of a medal in the judo, where Black Country judoka Craig Fallon will be competing in the men's 60kg competition, which is just bouting off now. On paper Fallon looks a shoo in. Except that while he was crowned world champion in 2005, and then European champion in 2006, he crashed out in the second round in Athens. After his defeat at the hands of Revazi Zintiridis, his coach blamed the ref, "you're not going to get any favours from the referees" when you're "in Greece fighting a Greek guy". We'll see.
05:41am: To the gymnasium, where the men's teams are locked in qualifying (team and individual) battle. Italian Enrico Pozzo is currently letting loose on the pole horse, people in the know say it was average, but to my eyes it was extraordinary. The Chinese athletes, of course, have always excelled in this area. Anyone else remember this?
05:50am: In the second women's basketball match New Zealand are following the winning example of neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours Australia, they're leading Mali 42-33 at half-time.
06:05am: One of the nicest stories from out of the leftfield of the Athens Olympics was the silver medal of photogenic badminton mixed doubles pair Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson. Well, the singles tournament is already underway. Pick of the games so far was Indonesian Maria Kristen Yulianti staging a late fightback to beat German hopeful Juliane Schenk in a superb three setter. The Chinese top seeds Lin Dan (male) and Xie Xingfang (female) play tomorrow. Athens quarter finalist Tracey Hallem and rising male hopeful and world no.20 Andrew Smith provide the home challenge. BEIJING: A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics on Saturday, team officials and state media said.
The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just five miles from the main Olympics site.
The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.

China wins first swimming gold at Beijing Olympics

MOSCOW, August 14 (RIA Novosti) - China's Liu Zige broke the 200m butterfly world record on Thursday as she stormed to victory to take China's first swimming gold medal at the Beijing Olympics.
"I didn't expect I could swim so fast, I never imagined I could win gold in the Olympic Games," said Liu, 19, who won in a time of 2:04.18 seconds. Teammate Jiao Liuyang came in second with a time of 2:04.72 to make it a one-two for China.
The former world record holder, Australia's Jessicah Schipper, took the bronze.
Japan's Kosuke Kitajima, the double Olympic champion, took his second gold medal of the games on Thursday, successfully defending his 200m breaststroke title in a time of 2:07.64 seconds.
The 25-year-old swimmer, nicknamed the Frog back in Japan, retained his 100m breaststroke title on Monday, breaking the world record, to become the first male swimmer to win gold medals in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events at successive Olympic Games.
Australia's Rickard Brenton touched in second in a time of 2:08.88, with Huques Duboscq of France taking the bronze.
And in the team event, Australia destroyed the world record by nearly 6 seconds in the women's 4x 200m freestyle event when they took the gold in 7:44.31 seconds, 1.62 seconds ahead of China in second place.
Stephanie Rice, who took her third gold of the Games, led off followed by Linda Mackenzie, Kylie Palmer and Bronte Barratt said "For us to break the record by so far is amazing."
The favorites, the U.S, came in 2.02 seconds behind the Australians to win the bronze.

I too stand amidst tears in the safe confines of my home and watch with great pride as the Gold Medal is awarded to the Indian. The alarm rings!!! I get up. Oh God, it was a Dream. I felt so bitter. Why couldn't I Dream more! I switched on the TV in the morning to see the medals Tally. My favorite swimmer Phelps of the USA had just broken the World record in swimming. But no news of an Indian athlete making it to the podium. I got back to my morning chores and went back to my daily routine of catching local trains for work. I arrived at the station to see people rushing like bulls inside the trains. Each one was looking like an Olympic Champion. Some were clinging to the chains like a Gymnast. Two of them yelled at each other and had a Boxing bout. Seeing the commotion some Gymnasts climbed above the train. The Train chugged along. The daily Olympics began. I soon came back to my senses. As for my Dreams, I look forward to Olympics 2012.
